A roadside memorial stands adjacent to the spot on the Ashtown Road where he was shot. He was a member of a group which set out to ambush and assassinate the then Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Lord French. Their instructions were to let the first car pass and concentrate their main effort on the second car. Little did they know that Lord French was travelling in that first car and so escaped with his life. Martin was shot in the throat by a marksman in one of the back-up cars and died instantly . |
